EEOC commissioner delivers law commencement address at UI

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Paul Steven Miller, a member of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), will deliver the keynote address during commencement ceremonies for the University of Iowa College of Law at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in Hancher Auditorium.

Miller, who also serves on the executive committee of the President's committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities, is one of three commissioners currently serving on the board that oversees enforcement of the major federal statutes prohibiting employment discrimination. He will address the graduates receiving degrees from the UI College of Law. Other guest speakers for UI commencements Friday, May 15, Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 include:

-- Leonard Hadley, chairman and chief executive officer of Maytag Corp., speaking at the School of Management commencement at 10 a.m. Friday, May 15 in Clapp Recital Hall. Hadley was named chairman and chief executive officer of the Newton-based appliance manufacturer in 1993 after holding several executive positions with the company in a career with Maytag that began in 1959.

-- W.A. "Bill" Krause, chief executive officer of the Krause Gentle Corp., speaking at the College of Business Administration undergraduate commencement at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 16 in Hancher Auditorium. Krause began his career in 1959 as the owner of a small gas station in Hampton and went on to found one of the Midwest's leading convenience store chains. Krause Gentle Corp. currently includes 156 Kum'N'Go convenience stores and 19 other companies.

-- Darrell Wyrick, president of the UI Foundation, speaking at the College of Engineering commencement at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 17 in Hancher Auditorium.

-- Susan Behrends Frank, who earned her Ph.D. from the UI School of Art and Art History in 1996, speaking at the Graduate College commencement at 2 p.m. Friday, May 15 in Hancher Auditorium. Frank won the 1997 Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award for the most distinguished dissertation produced in the arts and humanities in 1996-97.

-- Keith "Mac" Marshall, professor of anthropology, speaking at the College of Liberal Arts and College of Education commencement at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

-- Dr. William Erkonen, associate professor of radiology, speaking at the College of Medicine commencement at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 15 in Hancher Auditorium.

-- Nancy Bonthius, assistant professor of pharmacy, speaking at the College of Pharmacy commencement at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14 in Hancher Auditorium. Bonthius was recently chosen as the college's teacher of the year by a vote of the students.

-- Jane M. Thomas of Iowa City, a member of the graduating class, and Joann Eland, associate professor of nursing, speaking at the College of Nursing commencement at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in Hancher Auditorium. The two speakers were chosen by a vote of the members of the graduating class.
