UI Student Alumni Ambassadors named best organization in region
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Student Alumni Ambassadors
won recognition as the best student alumni organization in the region at
a district conference April 25-26 at Western Illinois University. The group
also won the right to hold the 1999 district conference in Iowa City.
Student Alumni Ambassadors, a branch of the UI Alumni Association, are
responsible for a wide variety of programs for students as well as alumni,
including Parents' Weekend, Reunion Weekend, and several philanthropic
endeavors. The group sponsors so many events and programs that its application
for Student Alumni Organization of the Year, which detailed the group's
work over the last year, totaled more than 300 pages.
The UI group was chosen Organization of the Year over groups from about
65 other colleges and universities in the region, which is designated District
5. "This puts us on a level head and shoulders above everybody else
in the district," said Steve Altman, a UI junior and director of public
relations for the organization. "It really sets us apart and makes
us an example for other student alumni groups."
Winning the district competition means the UI will be considered for
the National Organization of the Year award when the national student alumni
organization conference is held in August in Madison, Wis.
At the district conference, the UI student alumni ambassadors also won
an award for Best Program, in recognition of their outstanding Parents'
Weekend in October 1997.
In the competition to sponsor next year's district conference, the UI
was chosen over the University of Illinois. To compete for the location,
the groups had to create a complete conference plan, including schedules
of speakers, activities, and fees. The district conference will be held
in Iowa City April 23-25, 1999.
