Morris honored as Distinguished Alumnus in speech pathology and audiology
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Hughlett L. Morris, professor emeritus in the
University of Iowa department of speech pathology and audiology, is the
recipient of the department's 1997 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Morris earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the UI.
A practicing speech pathologist since 1952, he served on the UI faculty
from 1958 to 1993. Morris' primary area of specialization involved research
and treatment of cleft lip and palate.
In addition to serving as director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic
in the UI department of otolaryngology from 1965-1993, Morris also was
the director of the UI Cleft Palate Research Program. He led a large, multidisciplinary
team with support from the National Institute of Dental Research for more
than 35 years. Morris also served as chair of speech pathology and audiology
at the UI from 1976-1980.
Morris received the award prior to a lecture he delivered to students,
faculty and staff in the department on March 27.
