UI offers training course for women to learn skills for jobs in construction

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Women who are interested in a career in construction are invited to participate in a one-week training course offered by the University of Iowa Pre-Vocational Training Program. The course will be held April 20-24 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. There is no cost to attend the program and participants must be available to attend all five days of training.

The course consists of 40 hours of training, information, and practice in concrete work. Topics to be covered include safety hazards, construction mathematics, placement and consolidation of concrete, and finishing. Instructors will demonstrate proper use of jackhammer and compactor. No previous experience is necessary, but participants must be prepared for hands-on work. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

This program is offered because there are numerous jobs available that offer excellent wages for women if they have the necessary skills. In Johnson County, a woman with two young children must earn $15-$18 per hour to be economically self-sufficient. Most jobs in which women are traditionally employed pay between $5 and $8 per hour. Jobs in technical and skilled trades such as construction typically pay 30 percent more at entry level than traditional jobs for women and offer benefits and opportunities for advancement.

Co-sponsors of the program include the Iowa Department of Labor-Women's Bureau and Laborers-AGC Education and Training Fund.

This free training program takes place at the UI Oakdale campus. Women interested in the program must attend one of two orientation sessions. The first is Monday, April 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A. The alternative is Thursday, April 9, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the same location.

Some money is available to reimburse participants for child care and transportation expenses. For further information, contact the Pre-Vocational Training Program at (319) 335-0560.
