'Women and Money' series continues with presentation on 'Buying a House'

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Buying a House" is the topic of a public presentation scheduled Thursday, March 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at First National Bank, 204 E. Washington St. in Iowa City. The presentation is the fifth session in "Women and Money: Putting the Pieces Together," a series of workshops sponsored by the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC).

The two-hour workshop will provide valuable tips on preparing yourself financially, determining how much house you can afford, learning real estate and home-financing terminology, assessing how a real estate agent can aid the search process and examining your options for financing a home. Presenters will be Kim Ryan of Lepic-Kroeger Realtors and Peggy Doerge of First National Bank.

"Owning a home is part of the American dream, but the financial and legal aspects of buying a home can be like putting together a jigsaw puzzle - there are hundreds of details and decisions to consider," says Monique DiCarlo, director of the Women's Center. "The pieces of the home-buying puzzle will snap into place a lot easier if you educate yourself before you begin. It doesn't matter whether you are a first-time homebuyer or if you already own a home and are considering a change. Being an educated buyer means knowing what to do, when to do it , and who to contact."

The "Women and Money" series is co-sponsored by Johnson County Extension Service, Focus Forward, the Iowa Women's Foundation, and the Iowa City Senior Center. There is a $10 fee to attend the workshop; some scholarships are available. To register, call the Iowa Women's Foundation at (319) 337-4222. For more information, call the Women's Foundation or the Women's Resource and Action Center, phone (319) 335-1486.
