College of Medicine names Sontheimer head of dermatology
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Richard Sontheimer has been named head of the
department of dermatology in the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
In announcing the appointment,
Dr. Robert P. Kelch, dean of the college, says, "Dr. Sontheimer's
experience leading a department with complex research, clinical care and
medical education components will be a tremendous asset to us. We look
forward to drawing upon his administrative and clinical expertise."
The appointment is effective July 1.
Sontheimer comes to the UI from the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center in Dallas, where he currently serves as professor and vice
chairman of dermatology. He also holds significant responsibility for his
department's research initiatives, serving as co-director of the Skin Disease
Research Core Center and director of the Dermatological Immunology/Diagnostic
Immunology Clinical Laboratory. In addition, he directs the Immunodermatology
Fellowship Training Program at UT Southwestern.
"Iowa has always been viewed nationally as a solid clinical department
with excellent patient care," says Sontheimer. "One of my goals
is to further develop the research programs of the faculty."
He is a noted immunodermatology expert and has been particularly active
in the study of lupus. He currently serves on the editorial board of the
international journal, Lupus.
A graduate of the Southwestern Medical School, he completed his dermatology
residency and a Dermatology Foundation Research Fellowship in Immunodermatology
at the same institution. He also completed an internal medicine residency
at the University of Utah.
