UI asks Regents to approve increase in room and board rates

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The cost for a double occupancy room with full board will rise $163, to a total of $3,988 at the University of Iowa this fall if the State Board of Regents approves a proposal to be presented Wednesday, March 18 in Ames. The proposed rate is a 4.3 percent increase over the rate for the 1997-98 academic year.

Final action on the proposal will not be taken until the Regents' April meeting.

The overall cost of residence services will rise 4.2 percent under the proposal. That includes average rate increases of 4.7 percent for rooms, 3.8 percent for meals, and 3 percent for university apartments/family housing. The increase is needed to cover anticipated inflation and other increases in operating costs, said Margaret Van Oel, director of UI residence services.

The UI residence hall student government was consulted about the rate increases. Members of the Associated Residence Halls House (ARH) House of Representatives considered several alternatives before settling on the plan submitted to the Regents.
