UI plans March 10 dinner for visiting Japanese engineering students
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa chapter of Women in Science
and Engineering (WISE) will host a dinner for a group of female Japanese
engineering students from Tokyo Denki University and UI undergraduates
participating in the Student to Student Support in Science Peer Mentoring
Program on Tuesday, March 10.
The two groups will exchange information about course of study, overcoming
hurdles in a predominantly male profession, and career aspirations.
The TDU students are part of an annual program that brings two groups
of 15 Japanese engineering students to the university for three weeks of
intensive English language study in the linguistics department under the
direction of Maureen Burke, coordinator of the English as a Second Language
The University of Iowa and Tokyo Denki University have had a collaborative
agreement since 1984 arranging student and faculty exchanges. Kazuhiro
Ohta of Tokyo Denki University is currently completing a two-year position
as a visiting scholar in the department of urban and regional planning.
