Support group offered for 'Relocation Blues'

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Relocation Blues: When Moving is Not Entirely Our Choice" is the name of a new support group for people who have moved to Iowa to support their partner's or spouse's career.

The group, sponsored by the Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) at the University of Iowa, will meet each Thursday, beginning March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Perpetual Savings Bank, 301 South Clinton Street, Iowa City. Participation is free and open to the public, but membership is limited to 15 people. For more information, or to register, call WRAC at (319) 335-1486.

The group will provide an opportunity for its members to make the most of their relocation, says support group facilitator Linda Balkin Sherman, Psy.D., who is a consultant on optimal performance and adjustment for individuals, families and groups. Sherman moved to Iowa from Chicago in 1994 and is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Iowa City.

"Even when couples make the decision to relocate together, moving is stressful," Sherman says. "If the move is made to support one person's career, the employed partner has a structure, work life and goals in the new place to ease the stress. On the other hand, the other person can feel increasing isolation, depression and anger. These feelings can drain energy. The support group will empower individuals to re-focus energy on building a new life in their new environment."
