UI to provide quality primary care in a convenient setting: New center opens July 1

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A new University of Iowa Family Care Center featuring quality primary care health services, free parking and easy patient access opens July 1 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).

Located in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at University Hospitals on Melrose Avenue and Hawkins Drive, the UI Family Care Center specializes in patient-friendly service for the whole family, according to Dr. Richard LeBlond, the center's medical director.

"This center was designed with patients in mind," LeBlond said. "It incorporates the very latest concepts in convenient, quality care."

Patient amenities include on-site pharmacy, radiology, and laboratory services. Physician care is provided by a team of highly trained UI primary care specialists in family practice, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics. Each service has its own dedicated reception area, business office, and patient care area.

In addition, the UI Family Care Center's Counseling and Health Promotion Services staff experts provide up-to-date educational opportunities to help people achieve and maintain a state of wellness. For patients who prefer an even broader selection of health and wellness options, an Alternative Medicine Clinic provides these choices.

Patients can access the center via a new parking ramp adjacent to the UI Family Care Center, accessible through a dedicated entrance off Melrose Avenue. Parking is free.

Beth Houlahan, a registered nurse and co-director of the center with LeBlond, said the UI Family Care Center is driven by a philosophy of excellence in primary care.

"Primary care is person-centered, rather than disease or problem-specific, and addresses the most common health problems that people experience," she said. "Our primary care emphasis encourages greater interaction between patients, physicians, and support staff, combined with improved access and timeliness of support services. We're very excited by the comprehensive array of enhanced services we'll be offering to our patients and their families."

Effective July 1, a single phone number, (319) 384-7999, provides patients with direct access to the center's primary care services. The toll-free number for long-distance calls is 1-877-384-7999.

A public open house celebrating the opening of the UI Family Care Center will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 26. The event will feature activities for children and health screenings for adults, along with tours and refreshments.
