Support group continues discussions of 'Being in Our Bodies: Food,
Society and Us'
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University
of Iowa is continuing a series of weekly discussions on the topic of "Being
in Our Bodies: Food, Society and Us."
The group meets on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Women's
Center, 130 N. Madison, Iowa City. Women are encouraged to drop by during
any of the sessions.
"We will discover our relationship with food and the pressure that
women face from society, family, or other relationships," says Erin
Gee, facilitator for the group. "We will also address the emotions
associated with food and eating and how they may affect eating patterns."
"This is a necessary and important group for women in our community,"
says Courtney Reed Jenkins, coordinator of support groups for the Women's
Center. "Women get two messages from society. First, that we should
have good -- meaning model-like -- bodies. Second, we are still being told
that men are worth more in our society -- in fact, 13 cents an hour more.
These two messages create a climate in which women are encouraged to worry
more about their weight than about their potential to influence society.
The group empowers women to re-focus energy on themselves as they are."
