Kathleen A. Edwards is new curator at the UI Museum of Art
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Art has appointed
Kathleen A. Edwards as its curator of prints, drawings, and photographs.
Edwards has been executive director of the Print Center in Philadelphia,
a non-profit institution supporting printmaking and photography, where
she organized more than 50 exhibitions. Among these were exhibitions featuring
the work of emerging artists including Laura Letinsky, Ernestine Ruben,
Adele Henderson, Kara Walker, Dean Teraski, Isaiah Zagar and Lois Johnson.
Under Edward's direction, the Print Center initiated "Crossing
Over/Changing Places," an exhibition sponsored by the United States
Information Agency. The exhibition, featuring the work of Print Center
residential artists Art Spiegelman and Robert Cumming, traveled throughout
Eastern Europe and ended at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. During
its tour Edwards served as a delegate for the USIA in Sofia, Bulgaria.
In her position as the UI Museum of Art's curator of prints, drawings,
and photographs, Edwards will be responsible for more than 5,200 art works
in the museum's permanent collection. She will focus on presenting exhibitions
from the collection, its new acquisitions and donations, and developing
the collection into a significant teaching tool.
Museum of Art Director Stephen Prokopoff commented, "I am delighted
that Kathleen has joined us at the museum. I am sure that she will make
a wonderful contribution to the museum and to art in Iowa City."
Edwards said, "I am thrilled to be part of the vital growing arts
community in and around Iowa City. I am impressed with the extensive collection
at the museum of art, which we hope to expand and make more accessible."
She also said she hopes to initiate future projects in collaboration with
other UI departments, artists from outside of Iowa, and other museums.
Edwards has been an invited critic and lecturer at the Maryland Institute
College of Art, a reviewer at Houston's Fotofest and Philadelphia's Society
for the Photographic Education Annual Conference, and has instructed Business
Practices in the Arts at the Visual Arts Management Certificate Program
at Rosemont College.
She has lectured at the Foreign Art Museum in Riga, Latvia, the National
Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Southern Graphics Council Conference
in Kansas City. She has served on awards panels for the New Jersey State
Council for the Arts, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the Center for
the Arts in Southern New Jersey, among others.
Edwards earned a master's degree in art education at the Philadelphia
College of Art, where she was the 1985 recipient of the Faculty Award for
Excellence in Art Education. She received her bachelor's degree. in art
history and studio art from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond,
