New support group aims to help women performers
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- If you want to replace Elvis as a performer with
household name fame, or if you simply want to be more comfortable performing
at a local coffeehouse, the Women's Resource and Action Center has a new
support group for you.
The group, designed to help women at all stages in their performing
career, is called "Women performers: Elvis has left the building."
The six-week support group will provide help in three areas of performance:
the written word, the sound of the performance, and the performance itself.
Meetings will be each Thursday for six weeks, beginning July 23, from
7 to 9 p.m. at the Women's Resource and Action Center, 130 N. Madison,
"This group is for women at all stages of their performing careers,
whether they are musicians, poets, prose writers, or performers of other
forms of musical and written expression," says Joy Mills, group facilitator.
"We will use improvisational activities as well as workshopping of
words and rhythms. The group's goal is to challenge women to become true
performers - to be able to project the image of their choice while they
are on stage."
For more information or to register for the group, call the Women's
Center at (319) 335-1486.
