Tipton to be served by new primary care health center

TIPTON, Iowa -- A new primary care health center employing a board-certified family practice physician and five support staff will begin serving Tipton area residents Monday, July 20.

The University of Iowa Family Care Center, Tipton, located at 127 W. South Street, is staffed by Dr. Elsie J. Verbik, a family practitioner who graduated from the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, in 1992. She completed her residency at Clarkson Family Practice in Omaha, Neb. in 1996 and most recently served as assistant program director for the Family Practice Residency Program at Beverly Hospital in Danvers, Mass.

Verbik is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. Born in Kuwait, she and her husband, David, are the parents of a 15-month-old daughter. Her extracurricular interests include piano, classical instrumental music, gardening, and travel.

"This is an excellent opportunity for my family and me," Verbik said. "We're very excited by the opportunity to live and work in Tipton."

The family-oriented facility includes laboratory and radiology support services and can be expanded should the need arise. As part of a commitment to health care education, the clinic will offer preventive medicine outreach to community residents.

Tipton Mayor Wayne Deerberg said, "We're very excited to see this project come to fruition and to have Dr. Verbik and her family join the community."

The clinic is managed by University of Iowa Community Medical Services Inc. (UICMS), a subsidiary of the University of Iowa Health System, formed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the UI College of Medicine. In addition to Tipton, UICMS also manages new or planned clinics serving Belle Plaine, Centerville, Coralville, Lone Tree, Lowden, North Liberty, Ottumwa, Perry, Sigourney, Toledo, and Wapello.

Terry Protextor, executive director of UICMS, said the clinic's affiliation with UI Community Medical Services Inc. will give patients access to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, an internationally recognized comprehensive health care center. "This will certainly enhance the health care options of people living in the Tipton area," he said. "We think it's a win-win situation for all involved," he said.
