Subscription savings are still available for UI arts events

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The 1997-98 performing arts season at the University of Iowa is half completed, but subscription discounts are still available for a variety of performances at University Theatres and Hancher Auditorium.

The three winter-spring University Theatres Mainstage productions are available as a subscription package that offers a discount of 25 percent. The productions are "Eccentricities of a Nightingale" by the UI's most illustrious playwriting graduate, Tennessee Williams, in a Golden Anniversary production Feb. 5-15; the world premiere of "Salt" by guest playwright Migdalia Cruz and director Juan Rodriguez of the Chicago Latino Theatre Company, Feb. 26-March 8; and Shakespeare's magical "A Midsummer Night's Dream," re-set in the moonlit streets of New Orleans, April 2-12.

Two of Hancher's series, offering a 20-percent package-price discount, have yet to begin:

* the Iowa City Press-Citizen Millennium Series, presenting artistic pathfinders who point the way to the next century -- the Kronos Quartet at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24; Rinde Eckert's "Romeo Sierra Tango" at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 17-18; and Carbone 14's "Dead Souls" at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, March 24-25; and

* Voices of Africa, featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, and Samite at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5.

Hancher ticket buyers may also still take advantage of volume discounts by creating their own custom series of three or more events. A custom package of 3-5 events qualifies for a 10-percent discount, and a package of six or more events qualifies for a 15 percent discount. Most winter-spring Hancher-sponsored events are available for the volume discounts.

Series subscriptions for University Theatres and Hancher are available from the Hancher box office, which resumes its regular business hours on Monday, Jan. 12.

Hancher box office hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday. From the local calling area or outside Iowa, dial (319) 335-1160. Long distance within Iowa and western Illinois is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER. Fax to (319) 353-2284. Orders may be charged to VISA, MasterCard or American Express. UI students may charge their purchases to their university bills, and UI faculty and staff may select the option of payroll deduction.

People with special needs for access, seating and auxiliary services should dial (319) 335-1158. This number will be answered by box office personnel prepared to offer assistance with handicapped parking, wheelchair access and seating, hearing augmentation and other services. The line is equipped with TDD for people with hearing impairment who use that technology.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen is the major corporate sponsor of the Millennium Series, and UI Men's Intercollegiate Athletics is the major corporate sponsor of the Voices of Africa series, through the University of Iowa Foundation.
