Global Focus: Human Rights '98 program wins award
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Global Focus: Human Rights '98, the University of
Iowa yearlong program commemorating the 1948 signing of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, is one of four winners of a "Human Rights Hero"
award to be presented Dec. 5 in Chicago.
The award, given by the Chicago-based Midwest Coalition for Human Rights
(MCHR), is presented to organizations in the Midwest that make an outstanding
contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights and demonstrate
commitment to the principles outlined in the Declaration. Burns Weston,
UI professor of law, and chair of the HR '98 committee, will travel to
Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. to accept the award.
"It is very gratifying to receive this award," Weston says.
"It demonstrates well that the University of Iowa is receiving
from around the country and world the recognition it deserves for its bold
vision and commitment to human rights. It befits a world-class university
such as ours!"
Other winners are: the Children's Law Center of Minnesota, the Illinois
Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Northwest Indiana Coalition
to Abolish Control Unit Prisons.
