UI women's groups kick off academic year with reception
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A number of campus women's groups at the University
of Iowa are holding a joint academic year kick-off celebration, "Building
a Community of Women," on Wednesday, Sept. 2 in the South Room of
the Iowa Memorial Union. The event will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and Christine
Grant, the UI Women's Athletic Director, will speak at 5:15 p.m. on the
importance of teamwork in the university community.
The groups sponsoring the program are: Associated University Women,
Council on the Status of Women, Rape Victim Advocacy Program, Women in
Science and Engineering, Women's Athletics, Women's Resource and Action
Center, and Women's Studies. The collaborative effort is designed to give
women on campus an opportunity to learn about all the different organizations
that address their needs.
"We wanted to have a program to showcase the variety of resources
and groups available to all University of Iowa women," said Jan Warren,
chairwoman of the Council on the Status of Women, and one of the event
organizers. "We also wanted to start out the new year by reconnecting
with each other and giving new members of the community a chance to learn
how women on campus support each other."
The program is open to all UI faculty, staff and students, and refreshments
will be served. For more information, contact Warren at 335-6148.
