UI COLLEGE OF MEDICINE WHITE COAT CEREMONY

WHAT: Fourth annual White Coat Ceremony for incoming UI medical students

WHERE: Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa College of Medicine's White Coat Ceremony part of the college's orientation program will welcome 175 new UI medical students on Friday, Aug. 21. The ceremony encourages students to demonstrate integrity, honor and compassion as they learn and practice medicine.

After remarks including a keynote address by Dr. Richard M. Caplan, professor emeritus of dermatology, students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, they will recite the Oath of Hippocrates. A reception will follow in the Hancher Auditorium lobby.

The ceremony began in 1995 with support from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which is dedicated to advancing compassion and humanism in medicine. The foundation also has assisted the college in developing other programs that stress values alongside excellence in medical science.

Reporters and photographers are welcome to attend this event. For more information, contact Steve Maravetz at (319) 335-8033.
