UI to host April 27 high-tech career expo
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa will host the first-ever Eastern
Iowa High-Tech Career Expo from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday, April 27
at the Iowa Memorial Union.
Sponsored by the Iowa Software Association in coordination with the
Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) and the University of Iowa,
the Eastern Iowa High-Tech Career Expo is aimed at increasing the visibility
of high-tech career opportunities at Iowa companies.
Deanna Petersen, UI director of research marketing and corporate operations
in the office of the vice president for research, says that the expo will
have something for everyone. "This is the perfect event for freshman
to graduate students in computer science, information systems, engineering,
management information and other computer-related programs of study, as
well as undeclared majors, internship candidates, job seekers, career changers,
high school counselors and even high school students. Iowa employers need
access to people with computer-related skills, and skilled students need
high-tech jobs right here in Iowa. This is the first event in the state
aimed specifically at getting these two groups together," she said.
Students from more than 20 colleges in Eastern Iowa are invited.
She added that participants will have an opportunity to learn about
high-wage, high-skill computer-related careers in progressive Iowa companies,
to meet Iowa employers involved in exciting state-of-the-art projects,
and to learn about career opportunities and internships. Special information
booths will assist businesses with internships and offer guidance to individuals
interested in a career in computer science and engineering, computer programming
and information technology.
Persons seeking additional information and employers wishing to participate
in the expo, which is free and open to the public, may contact Jo Dickens
at the Iowa Memorial Union, (319) 335-3231, or Sue Green at the IDED, (515)
