UI conference April 21 looks at Cedar Rapids-based Genencor plant
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Manufacturers interested in exploring how the concept
of teams works in their business settings are invited to a seminar based
on the experience of the Cedar Rapids plant of Genencor International Inc.
on Tuesday, April 21 at the University of Iowa.
Genencor's "High Performance Work System" will be the focus
of the eighth conference in the "Teams in Manufacturing Series"
of the Center for Organizational Effectiveness of the UI College of Business
Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. April 21 in the Triangle Ballroom of the
Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) on the UI campus. The conference concludes with
a summary session at 4:15 p.m. Lunch is included.
The seminar is open to the public but requires registration. Registration
is $190 per person. For two or more people from the same organization,
the cost is $165 per person.
Jude P. West, director of the Center for Organizational Effectiveness,
says the session will provide a first-hand look at issues many managers
have to consider.
"Management personnel and members of various Genencor teams will
discuss their approach to a high performance work system," West says.
"From the company's selection of their site through its maturity as
a fully functional team-based operation, the successes and lessons learned
will be shared."
West will introduce the conference speakers at 9 a.m. and will discuss
some of the latest research on the use of teams in manufacturing.
Guest speakers and topics include:
-- Georg Anderl, plant manager, will discuss "Genencor International's
Journey to a High Performance Work System," from 10:35 a.m. to noon.
-- Ted Carlson, selection team, will discuss "How Genencor Selects
Employees for a Team Environment," from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.
-- Vance Scholte and Faith Anderson, both members of peer review teams,
will discuss "The Team Member Peer Review Process," from 2 p.m.
to 2:45 p.m.
-- Kimberly K. Lorenz, human resources manager, will discuss "The
Communications Process: Sharing Task, Plant, and Corporate Information
in a Team Setting," from 3:05 p.m. to 3:50 p.m.
