UI conference April 21 looks at Cedar Rapids-based Genencor plant

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Manufacturers interested in exploring how the concept of teams works in their business settings are invited to a seminar based on the experience of the Cedar Rapids plant of Genencor International Inc. on Tuesday, April 21 at the University of Iowa.

Genencor's "High Performance Work System" will be the focus of the eighth conference in the "Teams in Manufacturing Series" of the Center for Organizational Effectiveness of the UI College of Business Administration.

Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. April 21 in the Triangle Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) on the UI campus. The conference concludes with a summary session at 4:15 p.m. Lunch is included.

The seminar is open to the public but requires registration. Registration is $190 per person. For two or more people from the same organization, the cost is $165 per person.

Jude P. West, director of the Center for Organizational Effectiveness, says the session will provide a first-hand look at issues many managers have to consider.

"Management personnel and members of various Genencor teams will discuss their approach to a high performance work system," West says. "From the company's selection of their site through its maturity as a fully functional team-based operation, the successes and lessons learned will be shared."

West will introduce the conference speakers at 9 a.m. and will discuss some of the latest research on the use of teams in manufacturing.

Guest speakers and topics include:

-- Georg Anderl, plant manager, will discuss "Genencor International's Journey to a High Performance Work System," from 10:35 a.m. to noon.

-- Ted Carlson, selection team, will discuss "How Genencor Selects Employees for a Team Environment," from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.

-- Vance Scholte and Faith Anderson, both members of peer review teams, will discuss "The Team Member Peer Review Process," from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

-- Kimberly K. Lorenz, human resources manager, will discuss "The Communications Process: Sharing Task, Plant, and Corporate Information in a Team Setting," from 3:05 p.m. to 3:50 p.m.
