Celebration to mark first phase of improvements to UI Softball Complex
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The public is invited to attend the "Turn on
the Lights" celebration for the Grand Stand Campaign for Iowa Women's
Softball Thursday, April 23 at the University of Iowa Softball Complex.
The celebration will be held at approximately 5:30 p.m., following the
first game of the Hawkeyes' double-header against Creighton University.
Admission to the games will be free. The complex is located at the intersections
of Highway 6 and Mormon Trek Boulevard in Coralville.
"Turn on the Lights" will celebrate the completion of the
first phase of improvements to the intercollegiate diamond within the Iowa
Softball Complex, including new bleachers and lighting. The event will
recognize Musco Lighting and its president, Joe Crookham, for the company's
generous gift in kind of the design, manufacture and installation of light
fixtures. Crookham is a graduate of the UI College of Business Administration.
The celebration will be hosted by UI Women's Intercollegiate Athletics
Director Christine H. B. Grant, Grand Stand Campaign Committee Co-chairs
Darold Albright and UI Softball Head Coach Gayle Blevins, and Jana Egeland,
assistant director of development for Women's Intercollegiate Athletics
at the University of Iowa Foundation. Representatives from Musco Lighting
of Oskaloosa will be special guests at the event.
The Musco gift, valued at $82,000, helped put the Grand Stand Campaign
for Iowa Softball more than halfway toward its goal of $1 million to fund
upgrades to the softball facility. High-level contributors will be recognized
by named areas in the complex, including locker rooms, a press box and
other new features. These improvements will be made following the 1998
According to Jana Egeland, Musco's contribution is the largest gift
in kind ever received by UI Women's Intercollegiate Athletics. Musco Lighting
designs and manufactures permanent and temporary lighting for sports, recreation
and other large facilities and events worldwide. The company's past and
present projects include the Rose Bowl, Super Bowls, the Daytona Speedway
and the rededication of the Statue of Liberty.
The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support
for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation
staff work with alumni, friends and businesses to provide funds for facilities
improvements, scholarships and other forms of support for the UI.
