Release: Immediate

71.9 percent of UI student-athletes earn degrees in six years or less

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Nearly 72 percent of student-athletes who entered the University of Iowa in the fall of 1991 earned a UI degree in six years or less, according to the UI's 1998 NCAA Graduation-Rates Disclosure Form.

The graduation rate of 71.9 percent is the highest achieved by UI student-athletes since the entering class of 1983, the first year for which the UI began tracking graduation rates. The previous high was a 71.8 percent graduation rate for the 1988 entering class.

The NCAA figures include only student-athletes who received athletic scholarships during their freshman year. According to the most recent report, 57 UI students who were freshmen in 1991 received athletics aid. Of that group, 41 earned a degree in six years or less.

The graduation rate of student athletes in the 1991 entering class was 10 percentage points better than the members of the general student body from the same entering class (61.9 percent). It was also an improvement on the graduate rate achieved by student athletes in the 1990 entering class (67.7 percent).

Here are some other highlights from the report:

* For the 1991 entering class, 75 percent of women student-athletes (18 of 24) earned a degree in six years or less. That rate was second only to the six-year graduation rate for the student-athletes in the entering class of 1990 (77.1 percent). For women in the general student population in the 1991 entering class, the graduation rate was 62.7 percent.

* For men in the 1991 entering class, the graduation rate was 69.7 percent for student-athletes (23 of 33) and 61 percent for the general student population. The male athletes in the 1991 entering class posted the second-best ever graduation rate, eclipsed only by the entering class of 1988 (72.1 percent).

* Students in the general population of the 1991 entering class took slightly less time, on average, to earn their degree than student-athletes. The average time to degree for the general population was 4.57 years; for student-athletes it was 4.73 years.

* The graduation rate for male African-American student-athletes from the 1991 entering class was 60 percent (3 of 5). There was only one African-American woman athlete who entered the UI in 1991, and she also earned a degree in six years or less. Among African-Americans in the general UI student body for the 1991 entering class, the six-year graduation rate was 34.1 percent for women and 33.3 percent for men.

* Sixty-one percent of the football players (11 of 18) who entered the UI in 1991 earned a degree in six years or less.

* Because of the small number of basketball players given athletics aid in a given year - from one to seven - the graduation rates fluctuate widely from year to year. In the previous five years, 63.2 percent of the women (12 of 19) and 42.1 percent of men (8 of 19) earned degrees in six years or less.

* Graduation rates are highest among student-athletes who compete for their four full years of eligibility. Among those who entered the UI in 1991 and competed in sports for four years, the graduation rate was 90.9 percent.
