UIHC sponsors seminar on the latest advances in heart health for
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Area women are invited to a free seminar discussing
heart disease and prevention Wednesday, April 15, sponsored by the University
of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as part of its centennial celebration.
Health for Your Lifetime: Conquering Heart Disease in Women is the first
in a series of educational seminars planned this year. The free session
is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn, 1220 First Avenue, Coralville.
In addition, free cholesterol screenings and blood pressure checks will
be offered from 6-7 p.m. as people register. The seminar will feature three
University of Iowa physicians: Dr. Douglas Behrendt; Dr. Susan Johnson;
and Dr. Kevin Mulhern. Mulhern, director of Clinical Cardiology Programs
and the Heart Disease and Pregnancy Program, will focus on vitamins, exercise
and even red wine and their potential impact on preventing heart attacks
and strokes in women.
Johnson, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and an associate dean
in the College of Medicine, will review the issue surrounding hormone replacement
therapy and how it affects heart disease in post-menopausal women.
Behrendt, professor and chairman of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery,
will discuss the latest developments in cardiac surgery and the options
