Minority enrollment holds steady at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Minority students account for 9.5 percent of the total enrollment at the University of Iowa this fall. That figure matches the percentage of minority students enrolled in the fall of 1996 and marks the fourth consecutive year in which the UI's minority enrollment has exceeded the goal set by the State Board of Regents of a minority enrollment of at least 8.5 percent.

Total minority enrollment for the current academic year is 2,653. Last year's total was 2,650. Undergraduate minority enrollment is 1,581, virtually unchanged from last year's total of 1,587. The same was true among graduate and professional students, where this year's total was 1,072. Last year there were 1,063.

Minority enrollment was up in three categories: African American, American Indian/Native Alaskan, and Asian or Pacific Islander.

Minority enrollment at the UI has been climbing steadily since 1984, when the percentage of minority students was less than 5 percent. Minority enrollment hit 6 percent in 1988, passed the 7 percent mark in 1990, and the 8 percent mark in 1993. In 1994, minority enrollment grew to 9 percent, the first time the UI exceeded the Regents' goal.

The figures for minority enrollment do not include foreign students who are attending the UI on student visas. This year, there are 1,612 foreign students on campus. Last year's figure was 1,669.
