UI called "best buy" by Fiske Guide to Colleges

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Another college guide has rated the University of Iowa among the nation's best buys in higher education. Edward B. Fiske, former education editor for The New York Times and author of The Fiske Guide to Colleges, included the UI among a list of 42 institutions--21 public and 21 private--that "offer remarkable education opportunities at a relatively modest cost."

The Fiske Guide groups colleges and universities into four price categories ranging from inexpensive to very expensive, according to a news release from Times Books, publisher of the guide. "All of Fiske's Best Buys fall into the inexpensive to moderate price category, and most have four- or five-star academic ratings," the news release states.

In the past year, the UI has also been rated as a "best buy" by Money magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, and Newsweek.

"We are very pleased that over and over again we are recognized as a best buy nationally in many different guides and regardless of the methodology used for determining the rankings," said UI President Mary Sue Coleman. "Our alumni have told me many times that they are extremely gratified to observe that the University of Iowa is nationally known for high quality and low cost."

Other public universities on the best buy list of The Fiske Guide are the University of Colorado at Boulder, Evergreen State College, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Institute of Technology, Mary Washington College, Miami University of Ohio, University of Minnesota at the Twin Cities, New College of the University of Southern Florida, University of North Carolina at Asheville, UNC at Chapel Hill, University of Kansas, St. Mary's College of Maryland, State University of New York - Binghamton University, SUNY-Geneseo, University of Texas at Austin, University of Oregon, University of Virginia, University of Washington, College of William and Mary, and University of Wisconsin at Madison.
