Fourth annual Iowa Women's Music Festival is Sept. 13

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The fourth annual Iowa Women's Music Festival will be Saturday, Sept. 13, on the University of Iowa Arts campus near Hancher Auditorium. The event, which begins at noon, is free and open to the public.

The Iowa Women's Music Festival is designed to put a spotlight on female performers and artists from Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Featured performers this year include Iowa City vocal harmony ensemble Too Much Yang, progressive folk singer-songwriters Jennifer Danielson and Bejae Fleming, and punkish rock group the Janet Theory. The festival will conclude with an 8 p.m. Hancher performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock, a six-woman a cappella group that has been performing music celebrating the roots, history, and future of African-American culture for more than 20 years. Tickets are required for the Hancher event.

The festival will also feature arts and crafts vendors, tae kwon do and self defense demonstrations, and an open microphone area.

The Iowa Women's Music Festival is sponsored Prairie Voices Productions and the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center. Co-sponsors include Hancher Auditorium, Alternatives, New Pioneer Coop, the Iowa City Press Citizen, ICON, the Stepping Up Project, Old Capital Screen Printing, Benson and Hepker Design, Heatherington and Associates, Lois James Investment, the Emma Goldman Clinic, A Great Balancing Act, Trillium Women's Health Service, Alterations, Iowa City NOW, Spirit Hill, and the Breakroom.
