Selden Smith joins UI Foundation as director of development for UI
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Selden W. Smith of Philadelphia, Pa., has joined
the staff of the University of Iowa Foundation as director of development
for the UI Libraries. Smith has been associate director of library development
and external affairs at the University of Pennsylvania Library since July
"Selden's outstanding fund-raising experience with a major university
library makes him an excellent addition to our staff," said Michael
New, the foundation's vice president for development programs. "His
responsibilities will include developing long-term fund-raising strategies
for the Libraries. In addition to cultivating prospective donors, he'll
work closely with UI alumni and friends and the Libraries Friends group."
Smith has also served as associate director of development at the Historical
Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Before entering the development
field, Smith was an editorial and new business assistant for Towers Perrin
Forster and Crosby (TPF&C), an employee compensation and benefits consulting
firm. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in English from Pennsylvania State
University in 1978.
Sheila D. Creth, university librarian, said the UI Libraries staff members
and the Advisory Board of the Friends are excited about working with Selden
Smith as a full-time fund raiser for the Libraries. "He brings valuable
knowledge and fund-raising experience for the University Libraries,"
said Creth, "and he understands that funds raised for the Libraries
contribute directly to the quality of teaching and research activities
at The University of Iowa."
Smith is a member of the National Society of Fund-Raising Executives
and the Academic Library Advancement and Development Network, of which
he is a co-founder.
The University of Iowa Foundation is the preferred channel of support
for private contributions to all areas of the University of Iowa. Foundation
staff members work with alumni and friends to provide support for a broad
range of programs and projects at the University of Iowa.
