UI researcher wins international journal award
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Peter O'Grady, professor and chair of the department
of industrial engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering,
has been awarded the 1997 Norman A. Dudley Award for the best paper, "Featured-Based
Design of Electronics Assemblies," co-authored by his former doctoral
students C. Kim and Y. Kim and published in the "International Journal
of Production Research."
Under the terms of the award, O'Grady will be formally recognized for
his achievement during a ceremony in London in October.
O'Grady came to the University in 1995 and earned his bachelor's degree
from the University of Cambridge in 1973 and his doctorate from the University
of Nottingham in 1981. He currently serves as editor of "Design,"
the transactions of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, as well as U.S.
editor of the "Journal of Design and Manufacturing" and associate
editor of the "Journal of Manufacturing Systems." He is a member
of the editorial boards of the "International Journal of Computer
Integrated Manufacturing," the "International Journal of Production
Planning and Control," the "Journal of Computers and Industrial
Engineering," and the publication "Engineering Design and Automation.
He also serves as director of the Iowa Internet Laboratory with active
research activities in collaborative systems for design and manufacturing,
3D imaging for medical applications, remote collaborative design for modular
products, genetic algorithms for design for assembly, object-oriented database
systems, product visualization, and distributed design. He has received
the Clifton A. Anderson Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
