UI accepting applicants for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa International Programs is accepting
applications for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships from
U.S. graduate students pursuing international careers.
Students in professional or interdisciplinary programs at all UI colleges
can apply for either an academic year 1998-99 or summer 1998 and summer
1999 fellowships. The application deadline is Feb. 2, 1998.
The FLAS selection committee, composed of UI faculty and staff members,
expects to award four to five academic year and two to three summer fellowships.
The awards, which offer full tuition and a $10,000 stipend for the academic
year and a $2,400 stipend for the summer, will be announced March 31,1998.
Last year's fellowship recipients studied Kiswahili, Kishambaa, Hindi,
Swahili and Russian at the UI and abroad. Fellowships also allow students
to study foreign languages at any university in the United States.
Applicants can be at any level in the less-commonly taught languages,
but are required to be at the intermediate or advanced level in French,
German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese or Portuguese. Preference
will be given to those who do not possess language fluency at the level
of native speakers. Applicants should outline how language study will be
used to enhance their international careers.
1997-98 FLAS Fellowships recipients are graduate students in a wide
variety of professional and interdisciplinary fields such as history, geography,
art history, clinical pharmacy, medical anthropology, law, journalism and
FLAS Fellowships are awarded annually and are funded by a Title VI grant
to the UI from the U.S. Department of Education.
Application packets are available in 226 International Center or at
the Dean's offices of each UI College. For more information, contact International
Center Director Karen Chappell, International Programs, at (319) 335-0368.
