UI Press publishes 1997 Iowa Short Fiction Award winning collection
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A collection of short stories by a Cleveland author
who won the 1997 Iowa Short Fiction Award has been published by the University
of Iowa Press.
"Thank You for Being Concerned and Sensitive," by Jim Henry,
is a collection of 12 short stories praised for their quirky humor and
for their often darkly sardonic view of modern life.
Author Ann Beattie, judge for the 1997 competition, compared Henry's
work to noted American author Donald Barthelme.
"[Henry's] characters struggle with private dreams and demons and
with public versus private realities," Beattie said. "I think
'Congressman Spoonbender' is a wonderful story, and -- as with so many
of the stories -- it's difficult not to feel uneasily, and perhaps a bit

The competition is also conducted by the UI Writers' Workshop.
Jim Henry was raised in suburban Chicago and Cleveland. He earned a
bachelor's degree from the City College of New York and is currently finishing
his master's in English at Cleveland State University. His stories have
appeared in Whiskey Island and Studies in Contemporary Satire.
