UI Libraries, Alumni Association sponsor program for mystery readers
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries and
the UI Alumni Association present "The Poison Pen," a program
in the Intrigue at Iowa Mystery Series on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids. Intrigue at Iowa is an ongoing
survey of the mystery fiction genre coordinated by the University of Iowa
Libraries. The program is free and open to the public.
"The Poison Pen" features Dr. Richard Caplan, a UI alumnus
who recently retired from the faculty of the UI School of Medicine, and
Lois Cox, a professor at the UI School of Law and an avid student of the
Caplan is the author of "Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes",
which imitates the original Holmes stories and elaborates on the story
of how the main characters of Arthur Doyle's Holmes novels meet. He is
also the founder a local chapter of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI),
an international society of readers and scholars devoted to Sherlockian
Cox recently attended Bouchercon, a worldwide conference dedicated to
mystery writing and reading. Additionally, Cox belongs to a local group
that explores the writings of women mystery authors.
The Elmcrest Country Club is located at 1000 36th St. Northeast. Directions
