UI CAMPUS NOTES -- IOWA CENTER FOR THE ARTS
POET HILLMAN READS APRIL 4 -- Poet Brenda Hillman, an alumna and former
faculty member of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, will read from
her work at 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, in Prairie Lights Books, 15 S. Dubuque
St. in downtown Iowa City. The reading, sponsored by the UI Writers' Workshop
and Prairie Lights, is free and open to the public.
As part of the "Live at Prairie Lights" series, the reading
will be broadcast live on WSUI radio, AM 910.
Hillman is the author of the highly acclaimed poetry collections "Coffee
at 3 a.m.," "Fortress," "Death Tractates," "Bright
Existence" and "White Dress."
Her work has appeared in periodicals that include The New Yorker, Mademoiselle,
Grand Street, the Paris Review, Ploughshares and Antaeus. Her poems have
appeared in anthologies including the "Pushcart Press Anthology"
and "Best American Poems of 1990."
Hillman has received numerous award and honors that include fellowships
from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts,
two Pushcart prizes, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award for Poetry and
the Bay Area Book Reviewers' Award.
Choice magazine says of Hillman, "The range in Hillman's work is
astounding. For the first section (of 'Bright Existence') she observes
the simple details of 12 dawns -- darkness and light, window shades, birds
-- and in the process contemplates the nature of the soul, the dynamics
of consciousness and the meaning of suffering."
