UI asks Regents to approve 3.7 percent increase in room and board rates

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The cost for a double occupancy room with full board will rise $137, to a total of $3,825 at the University of Iowa this fall if the State Board of Regents approves a proposal to be presented Wednesday, March 19, in Ames. The proposed rate is a 3.7 percent increase over the rate for the 1996-97 academic year, which matches the lowest percentage increase in the past five years.

Final action on the proposal is not expected until the Regents' April meeting.

The overall cost of residence services will rise 3.63 percent under the proposal. That includes average rate increases of 3.98 percent for rooms, 3.06 percent for meals, and 3.51 percent for UI apartments and family housing. The increase is needed to cover anticipated inflation and other increases in operating costs, said Margaret Van Oel, director of UI residence services.

The UI residence hall student government was consulted about the rate increases. Members of the Associated Residence Halls House (ARH) House of Representatives considered several alternatives before settling on the plan submitted to the Regents. ARH representatives voted to apply an equal cost increase of $84.15 to all basic room rates and a 1 percent increase for premiums such as suites, kitchens, air conditioning and private baths. The cost of amenities is in addition to basic room rates, but the total is split by the people occupying the room.
