UI's Pedro Alvarez selected to attend National Academy of Engineering
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Pedro J. Alvarerz, associate professor of civil and
environmental engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering,
has been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering's
(NAE) 1997 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium Sept. 18-20 at the Arnold
and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, Calif.
The symposium, designed to bring together some of the country's top
engineers between the ages of 30 and 45, will highlight leading-edge research
and technical work. The participants come from industry, government, and
academic institutions and were selected from a field of more than 270 nominees.
The topics to be featured at the symposium include biomechanics, sensors
and control for manufacturing processes, safety and security issues, decision-making
tools for design and manufacturing, and intelligent transportation systems.
NAE member Philip M. Condit, president and chief executive officer of
the Boeing Company, Seattle, will deliver a keynote address.
