Contract negotiations with grad assistants result in voluntary agreement
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A voluntary agreement for a collective bargaining agreement
covering University of Iowa graduate teaching and research assistants was
reached Wednesday, Feb. 26, by the Iowa State Board of Regents for the University
of Iowa and the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE),
Local 896, Campaign to Organize Graduate Students (COGS).
Terms of the two-year contract provide for salary and insurance benefits,
paid leaves and holidays, grievance procedures and other terms of employment.
The agreement was reached just prior to an arbitration hearing to resolve
the contract dispute.
Representatives of both the UI and the union are pleased to have reached
a voluntary agreement and look forward to working under the terms of the new
Graduate teaching and research assistants voted to be represented by UE/COGS
in April 1996, and this agreement represents the first negotiated agreement
between the parties.
