UI video on foreign student health garners national award

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa video designed to help new foreign students navigate the U.S. health care system has won national recognition from Communications Awards, a nonprofit group which promotes quality programming in instructional videos.

"The World in Balance," taped on the UI campus last spring, received an Award of Distinction from the group. The award is offered for video projects that "exceed industry standards in conveying a company's or organization's message."

The video, which featured six UI foreign students describing their encounters with the U.S. health care system, stresses the importance of preventive care, advises new students to make use of the health resources on their campus and emphasizes the need for all students and their dependents to be covered by health insurance.

UI Foreign Student Advisor John Rogers was executive producer of the video and coordinated the taping on campus. GVI, Inc. of Washington, D.C. produced the video for NAFSA: Association of International Educators, which is distributing the video to universities and international education groups across the nation. The project was funded by grants from Pfizer, Inc. and International Group Services.

"The students told their personal stories," said Rogers. "We didn't write a script. We interviewed them and let their experiences shape the content. We think our students will have credibility with our target audience of new foreign students. And the fast-paced, MTV-style of the video is fun, too."

Rogers said a variety of community groups and UI departments and offices contributed to the success of the project, including the UIHC Public Information Office, Student Health Service, Residence Services, the Field House and the Great Wall Supermarket in Iowa City.

NAFSA is an 8,000-member organization of practitioners in international education exchanges. The group's mission is to strengthen and enrich educational exchanges between the United States and the rest of the world.
