UI video on foreign student health garners national award
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa video designed to help new foreign
students navigate the U.S. health care system has won national recognition
from Communications Awards, a nonprofit group which promotes quality programming
in instructional videos.
"The World in Balance," taped on the UI campus last spring, received
an Award of Distinction from the group. The award is offered for video projects
that "exceed industry standards in conveying a company's or organization's
The video, which featured six UI foreign students describing their encounters
with the U.S. health care system, stresses the importance of preventive care,
advises new students to make use of the health resources on their campus and
emphasizes the need for all students and their dependents to be covered by
UI Foreign Student Advisor John Rogers was executive producer of the video
and coordinated the taping on campus. GVI, Inc. of Washington, D.C. produced
the video for NAFSA: Association of International Educators, which is distributing
the video to universities and international education groups across the nation.
The project was funded by grants from Pfizer, Inc. and International Group
"The students told their personal stories," said Rogers. "We
didn't write a script. We interviewed them and let their experiences shape
the content. We think our students will have credibility with our target audience
of new foreign students. And the fast-paced, MTV-style of the video is fun,
Rogers said a variety of community groups and UI departments and offices
contributed to the success of the project, including the UIHC Public Information
Office, Student Health Service, Residence Services, the Field House and the
Great Wall Supermarket in Iowa City.
NAFSA is an 8,000-member organization of practitioners in international education
exchanges. The group's mission is to strengthen and enrich educational exchanges
between the United States and the rest of the world.
