UI offers courses for educators and administrators over the ICN
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Exploring ways to use new technology to teach students
in remote locations is the goal of a course from the University of Iowa beginning
in January and offered over the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), one of
several classes designed for educators and administrators in K-12 schools
and community colleges.
"Introduction to Distance Education" is a three-credit-hour course
that will explore issues surrounding the use of technology to provide distance
education. The course will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning
Jan. 21 at these sites: Council Bluffs, Davenport, Mason City, Ottumwa, Peosta,
Sioux Center, Sioux City, Spirit Lake, West Burlington and the UI.
The course is one of several ICN classes offered through the UI College of
Education and the Division of Continuing Education. The slate of spring education
classes is intended for students with an academic, professional or personal
interest in issues of K-12 and postsecondary education.
Courses meet requirements for the Iowa Regents Universities' Bachelor of
Liberal Studies (BLS) degree and are available for graduate credit as well
as professional development credit.
People interested in enrolling do not need to be registered in a UI program
to take classes.
Tuition is $107 a credit hour for undergraduates and $170 an hour for graduate

that meets from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Jan. 22 at these
sites: Bettendorf, Burlington, Clinton, Council Bluffs, Dubuque, Fort Dodge,
Johnston, Keokuk, Mason City, Milford-Okoboji, Ottumwa, Sioux City and the
University of Iowa.
-- "Curriculum Development," an upper-level, three-credit-hour
course that meets from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, beginning Jan. 26 at these
sites: Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Cresco, Des Moines, Estherville,
Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Mason City, Ottumwa, Peosta, Sheldon, Sioux City,
Waterloo, West Burlington and the University of Iowa.
-- "Foundations of Vocational Education," an upper-level, three-credit-hour
course that meets from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 20 at
these sites: Bettendorf, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Charles City, Clarinda,
Clinton, Council Bluffs, Creston, Dubuque, Emmetsburg, Fort Dodge, Jesup,
Johnston, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, Peosta, Sheldon and the University of Iowa.
-- "History of American Education," an upper-level, three-credit-hour
course that meets from 7 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 21 at
these sites: Council Bluffs, Dubuque, Emmetsburg, Pleasant Valley, Sioux City,
Spencer and the University of Iowa.
ICN sites may be subject to change and some sites may be added, depending
on availability and interest.
The UI Division of Continuing Education also coordinates a wide range of
graduate programs for those seeking advanced degrees in education, nursing,
business, social work and pharmacy.
