Dueling cookies add to enjoyment and intrigue of Hancher 25th

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- More than a dozen area bakeries and restaurants have created original, custom cookies to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium. At the Hancher Silver Anniversary Gala, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, audience members for the Simon Estes concert will be able to sample the results, and a panel of celebrity judges will select the best of the Silver Anniversary treats.

Mike and Melissa Huber of the Hancher Guild volunteer organization spearheaded the cookie contest, inviting bakeries and restaurants far and wide to participate. A baker's dozen establishments accepted the invitation.

The entrants are It's a Grind, Cookies and More, G.A. Malones, Iowa Memorial Union Catering, Iowa River Power Company, Jimmy's Bistro, the Cottage, the Highlander Prime Grille, the Holiday Inn, the University of Iowa Athletic Club, Vitos and Wetherby's in Iowa City/Coralville, and Healthy Exchanges of DeWitt. Healthy Exchanges is making cookies specially for diabetic audience members.

Each establishment will provide 500 cookies for the champagne-and-cookies reception at the Hancher Gala.

The Silver Anniversary Gala has been organized by the Hancher Guild, with former guild president Barbara Nicknish heading up the planning.

Klieg lights will light up the sky the evening of the Gala, and inside the lobby audience members will find decorations designed by Heaven Scent Flowers and Gifts and a wall display mounted by Hancher designer Ron McClellen, in addition to the exhibition of silverwork and jewelry by Chunghi Choo and her students in the UI School of Art and Art History, and by guest faculty members Donald Friedlich and Kyung Hee Hong.

Tickets for the Hancher Gala are available from the Hancher box office, (319) 335-1160 or toll-free in Iowa and western Illinois, 1-800-HANCHER.
