Cambus debuts new service to Hawkeye Apartments

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Cambus, the University of Iowa's free campus bus service, is debuting a new route to provide service to the Hawkeye Apartments, located on the UI''s far west campus, beginning Monday, Aug. 25. With the addition of that new route, several other route changes are going into effect. In addition, Cambus is implementing a new fixed-route service with buses equipped with front-step wheelchair lifts.

Hawkeye/Interdorm route. The new route is called the Hawkeye/Interdorm and runs from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Buses stop every 30 minutes at Hawkeye Drive, the Hawkeye Parking Lot and at Hawkeye Court. From there, the Hawkeye/Interdorm buses make main campus stops on the north side of UI Hospitals and Clinics, at Macbride Hall, eastside residence halls, including Mayflower Residence Hall, and Schaeffer Hall. From there, they return to the west campus with stops at Rienow Residence Hall and Hospital Ramp 2 before returning to Hawkeye Apartments.

Evening service for the Hawkeye/Interdorm route runs at 30-minute intervals from 6:30 p.m. to 12:41 p.m. with the last stop at Schaeffer Hall. Weekend service is every 60 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 12:11 a.m.

Red and Blue routes. With the addition of the new route, the Red and Blue routes run at 15-minute intervals for all stops. Previously those routes provided service at 10-minute intervals. However, those routes are now augmented by a new route, the Westdorm Shuttle, which shuttles between the Pentacrest and the westside residence halls at 15-minute intervals. That service is available from 8:14 a.m. to 2:39 p.m.

Interdorm and Mayflower Shuttle routes. Minor changes have been made to the Interdorm route and the Mayflower Shuttle. Interdorm buses, which serve all residence halls, run at 10-minute and 20-minute intervals from 8 a.m. to about 4:45 p.m. and at 30-minute intervals from 4:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Mayflower Shuttle, serving the Mayflower and eastside residence halls as well as the Pentacrest area, runs at 20-minute intervals from 6:50 a.m. to 4:38 p.m.

Hospital and Hospital via Hancher routes. The Hospital Route has also been changed to include an AM Hospital Route from Hospital Ramp 2 to the Carver Hawkeye Arena commuter parking lot from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Regular Hospital route buses provide direct service from the Finkbine and Arena lots to the Hospital Ramp 2. There is also an early morning service from 5:24 to 6:24 a.m. that includes stops at the loop north of UIHC. The Hospital route continues to offer mid-day service from 9:09 a.m. to 2:32 p.m., which includes a trip to downtown Iowa city once an hour.

A PM Hospital via Hancher route has been added to provide service from the north hospital area to the Hancher Commuter parking lot from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. The AM Hospital via Hancher route continues to operate from 7:09 to 7:47 a.m. Hancher commuters can also catch Blue Route buses for service to UIHC in the morning and Red Route buses for a ride from UIHC back to Hancher in the afternoon.

Buses with wheelchair lifts. With the acquisition of some new buses with front step wheelchair lifts, Cambus offers fixed-route service for people with disabilities. Hawkeye/Interdorm, Red and Blue route buses with the wheelchair lifts will be available half of the time during daytime service and on all buses after 9 p.m. weekdays as well as the entire weekend schedule.

Cambus also offers the Bionic Bus service for students, faculty and staff with disabilities. The Bionic Bus is a door-to-door demand-response service provided with lift-equipped mini-buses. Students, faculty or staff interested in that service may call 335-7595 for more information.

Maps, schedules and more information about Cambus routes are available on all buses, at various locations around campus, or on the World Wide Web at this address: http://www.uiowa.edu/~cambus. Information is also available by calling the Cambus office, (319) 335-8633.
