UI welcomes students with "A Hawkeye Hello!" tradition

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- New and returning University of Iowa students will be greeted with "A Hawkeye Hello!" - an annual week-long tradition to help acquaint students with the campus and each other during the first week of the fall semester in August.

The "Week of Welcome" events begin Sunday, Aug. 24, with a concert at Carver Hawkeye Arena featuring two bands, Mango Jam and The Drovers, and continues with a lecture by a popular UI professor on Monday, a hypnotist on Tuesday, and a behind-the-scenes look at MTV's popular "Loveline" show.

Picnics, a pizza party, an ice cream social, movies, a job fair, and tours and open houses at a variety of campus offices and services round out the long list of activities continuing through Aug. 31.

Sunday night's opening event is a 7:30 p.m. concert at Carver Hawkeye Arena. UI President Mary Sue Coleman, Vice President for Student Services Phillip Jones, and UI Student Government President Alison Miller will be on hand at that event.

One of the UI's most popular professors, Jay Holstein from the School of Religion, speaks Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Triangle Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU).

Ricky Kalmon, one of Chicago's hottest comedian-hypnotists, performs at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 26, in the IMU Main Lounge.

"You're on the Loveline with Dr. Drew and Adam Carolla" is the feature for Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the IMU Main Lounge. Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla will provide a behind-the-scenes look at their popular MTV advice show.

"A Hawkeye Hello!" is sponsored by the Iowa Memorial Union, UI Orientation Services and UI Residences Services with the help of 18 UI and Iowa City groups. Coordinators are Celine Hartwig of Residence Services, Judy Anderson of Orientation Services, and Jean Kendall of IMU Administration.
