Journal writing discussion group offered through WRAC
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Journal Writing" is a structured discussion
group for women and sponsored by the Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC)
at the University of Iowa. The group will meet from 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays,
beginning Sept. 9 and continuing through Oct. 28.
Members of the group will make their own journals, then explore their creativity
by using different exercises and media to fill their journals. Class size
is limited, so interested persons are encouraged to register by calling WRAC
at (319) 335-1486.
"This is a way to explore how we create, while at the same time providing
the time and space for experimenting with new ways of creating, of expressing
ourselves," explains Rachel Pickett, who will be the group's facilitator.
The idea for the group came from Pickett's experiences. "I found journaling
to be a source of strength and exhilaration, particularly during the times
in my life when my responsibilities and commitments outweighed free and fun
time," she says.
Pickett has designed the discussion group so that participants will have
time to try different forms of creativity in their journals. The group will
discuss the different forms of creativity, the feelings those forms evoke,
and other connections between weekly journal writing and the women's lives.
All group meetings will be held at WRAC, 130 North Madison, Iowa City (across
the street from the Iowa Memorial Union). For more information, call (319)
