Jebson to serve as interim head of anesthesia
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dr. Peter J. R. Jebson, professor of anesthesia at the
University of Iowa College of Medicine and director of the Hyperbaric Medicine
Service at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, has been named interim head of the
department of anesthesia, effective April 28.
Jebson replaces Dr. John H. Tinker, who has served as head of the department
since 1983. Tinker announced his resignation last August, but agreed to remain
on the UI College of Medicine staff until a replacement was named. He will
leave the UI to become professor and chair of anesthesiology at the University
of Nebraska/Clarkson Medical Center.
Jebson, who was interim head of anesthesia for one year before Tinker came
to the UI, will serve in his new position until a permanent department head
is named. The College of Medicine has formed a committee to undertake a nationwide
search to fill the position.
"Dr. Jebson is a well-respected member of the faculty and will provide
excellent leadership," says Dr. Robert P. Kelch, dean of the college.
"The College of Medicine appreciates the many contributions Dr. Tinker
has made to the medical center and to the university."
Jebson received his medical education at St. Andrews University in
Fife, Scotland, the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Royal
College of Surgeons, both in London. He received post-graduate training and
held various academic appointments in Scotland and England before joining
the UI faculty in 1980. At the UI, Jebson has been involved in a variety of
research, teaching and patient care activities. He has served as director
of the UIHC Hyperbaric Medicine Service since 1988.
