Morris gift supports speakers at UI College of Nursing gerontology conference
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A gift from Woodrow W. and Inabelle H. Morris of Iowa
City to the University of Iowa Foundation will help sponsor panel discussions
and lectures by prominent speakers at a national gerontology conference to
be held at the UI August 28-30.
Hosted by the UI College of Nursing's Gerontological Nursing Interventions
Research Center, the "Vitality throughout the Adult Lifecycle" conference
will focus on nursing interventions to promote quality of life and health
in aging populations.
"This gift is significant for the sharing of information in a field
that also was a specialty of Dr. Woody Morris," said Professor Toni Tripp-Reimer,
co-chair of the conference's national planning committee and director of the
UI's Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center. "While he
was at the university, Dr. Morris organized and led important gerontological
initiatives with faculty from the Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry,
and the School of Social Work."
After this year, the Woodrow W. and Inabelle H. Morris Visiting Professor
Fund will sustain a visiting lecture program in gerontological studies at
Morris joined the UI faculty in 1948, where he served many years as an associate
dean in the UI College of Medicine. The recipient of numerous state and national
awards for his research on aging, Morris directed the UI's former Institute
of Gerontology from 1957 to 1971. He is now a professor emeritus of the university.
