University Theatres season ranges from Shakespeare to world premieres

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University Theatres at the University of Iowa will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a Mainstage season that ranges from a Shakespeare classic to an Iowa sesquicentennial world premiere. Season subscription packages, which offer discounts of 30 percent, are now on sale through the Hancher Auditorium box office.

A season brochure, with order forms and detailed information on the productions and subscription packages, is available from the box office or from the UI department of theatre arts at (319) 335-2700. The brochure also includes information about University Theatres Second Stage and Gallery productions.

Subscribers receive priority seating, and free exchange privileges up to 24 hours before each performance for which they have purchased tickets. University Theatres subscribers may purchase all five Mainstage plays, or purchase a three-play package of their choice. The Mainstage productions in the UI Theatre Building are:

-- "Hawkeye!," an epic of Iowa's early history, commissioned from award-winning UI alumnus Peter Ullian, Oct. 10-20 in E.C. Mabie Theatre;

-- "A Preface to the Alien Garden," a scorching "gansta rap" drama of urban warfare by UI Playwrights Workshop student Robert Alexander, whose works have been toured by the San Francisco Mime Troupe and produced by top regional theaters, Nov. 7-17 in Theatre A;

-- Claire Chaffee's smart comedy "Why We Have a Body," winner of six Dramalogue Awards in Los Angeles and New York's George Oppenheimer Award for Best Emerging Writer, Feb. 6-16 in Theatre A;

-- a contemporary twist on Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," March 6-16 in E.C. Mabie Theater, and

-- "Spring Awakening," Frank Wedekind's classic 1891 play about emerging sexuality, April 10-20 in Theatre A.
